EXERCISE
By Phillip and Jane Mountrose

Many spiritually oriented people are turned off by commonly recommended approaches to exercise, which are often directed to the ego, with little or no consideration of the spirit. Yet most would agree that the body as a temple for the soul deserves to be maintained in optimal working order and this includes movement.

Fortunately, exercise can be enjoyable and it doesn't have to be painful. A good guide for learning to enjoy exercise and maximizing the benefits is John Douillard's book Body, Mind and Sport, which takes a holistic approach and explains how you can unleash your full potential, enjoy exercise, and produce optimal results painlessly.

We have based our approach on statistics showing that doing a a little exercise every day is better than doing a lot of exercise a couple times a week or less. If you have a problem with time, it might help to know that regular exercise also increases your vitality so you need less sleep, which creates time to exercise, no matter how busy you are.

As a reluctant exerciser, Jane found at first that she did best by exercising in the morning. That way, she started the day as a success, rather than possibly failing to reach her goal at the end of the day. She found that she felt better about herself right away and very soon began to feel more energetic. Over time, she has grown to enjoy it, knowing how wonderful her body feels.

Some recommended forms of exercise:

Lifting light weights is one of the best forms of exercise. It builds muscle and strengthens the bones, so it helps to prevent osteoporosis. We usually do some of this in the morning a few times a week. A good way to learn a balanced routine without having to spend a lot of time driving to a gym is by using an exercise video and a company called "The Firm" makes a series of them that combine the use of light weights with other movements, providing a mild aerobic workout at the same time.

Jumping on a mini-trampoline for about 10 minutes is said to be one of the best ways of cleaning the body’s lymph system, which collects toxins to be removed from the body. This system does not have a pump like the circulatory system, so it can become congested, resulting in toxic build-up. Movement causes the lymph to circulate, so any exercise will help.

The Five Rites: The booklet Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth describes five exercises from a remote monastery in Tibet that have produced dramatic results for a number of people. These rites are designed to energize and balance the body's energy centers (chakras) and optimize hormone production, thereby producing a youthful effect. They only require a few minutes a day and represent a kind of meditation that can also help you to release stress and feel more balanced right away. We have been using them with positive results.
