In exploring our identities, we start with the higher self or oversoul, the eternal source from which we descend into this reality. Our uniqueness relates to many things, including the oversoul’s vast range of experiences in this reality and others, along with what it has sent us here to learn and share. Basically, we are here to evolve and it follows that the oversoul sends us here equipped with the tools we need to achieve our goals, particularly our intuition and sense of higher guidance.
Yet, with our focus on the third dimension, most of us forget that we have these tools, so we need to retrieve them, polish them up, and learn to use them again. One of the main challenges and wonders in this type of learning is that each of us is so unique. We have come from vastly different sources in the higher realms, with varied backgrounds, so we access and interpret information in very different ways. This also makes the process of developing our intuitive abilities creative, enlightening, and often surprising as we open to the mysteries within ourselves.
In opening to your inner world and higher senses, the first key is to uncover and accept your unique way of accessing intuitive information. One of the most common pitfalls is dictating the form in which you expect the information to come. In this highly technological age, many people expect to receive clairvoyant messages in cinematographic color with surround sound; anything else is not worthy of their attention. We have seen people struggle with these kinds of expectations for years without making any progress. While there are exceptions, most people do not have visions that look like movies or hear messages that sound like radios; instead they are internal and more subtle, so this program will help you to explore how it works for you.
Children are great with this type of process, because they have vivid imaginations and no expectations, so they simply allow information to flow through them. Edgar Cayce made a direct connection between imagination and intuition. With this in mind, rather than limiting ourselves with rules about what we should experience, we can open to surprising possibilities and focus on what we do experience.
In her perceptive book The Other Side and Back, renowned psychic Sylvia Browne also addresses the question of how to open to your intuitive powers. From her perspective, a psychic development class would be the world’s shortest class, with just three key steps that go something like this:
- Ask a question to your higher wisdom or some higher power
- Open your mind to receive this wisdom
- Accept the first response you get
This sounds simple, and it is. But in keeping with our third dimensional perspective, we make it difficult. The first step is easy enough; most of us can come up with dozens of questions about our lives and about the meaning of life. The second and third steps are the tough ones; opening to receive higher wisdom and trusting it when it comes are both challenges for most people.
We would add that having techniques that help you to receive different types of information makes the intuitive process much easier. As we progress with this program, we will provide more specific recommendations to help you to open your communication channels and techniques you can use to access specific types of information. First, we want to provide some background on what you are opening to with your intuition, and how this can help you on the spiritual journey.
Opening Our Higher Senses
What are we looking for and what are we looking at with our higher senses? Basically, we are opening to perceiving more subtle energetic realms that lie beyond our physical reality, so we are perceiving varying frequencies of energy.
Beyond the physical level, everything is energy. Through quantum physics, scientists have discovered that we are indeed energetic beings. As such, each of us holds a vibratory frequency. Every person and every object has a unique energetic signature, which we can tap into to access information. Although most people are unaware of this concept, the terms "good vibes" and "bad vibes" are common expressions. Most people never consider what this really means, that we have an innate awareness of different frequencies of energy. This is what we are going to explore.
Just as there are many scales of notes in music, there are also many ranges of energetic frequencies. Beyond the normal level of our awareness, there are higher and higher frequencies of energy that step up in vibration through the levels of reality to our true source in the higher realms. As we progress on the spiritual journey, we can access higher and higher frequencies. This is why our understanding changes as we evolve; through these frequencies, we are connecting with higher levels of truth and wisdom.
Using this energetic model, each part of the body and the energy field, or aura, surrounding the body also holds an energetic frequency that we can tap into to find out what is occurring in any aspect of our life. In his book Edgar Cayce on the Akashic Records, author Kevin J. Todeschi noted that Edgar Cayce extended this concept further by stating that every event leaves a vibration in the pages of time and space. From this perspective, our reality itself is like a book, which is often called the Akashic Records, written in the language of energy. If we can interpret the information held within the frequencies of these records, all the knowledge and wisdom in the cosmos are available to us, if we are open to reading them.
Of course, this type of awareness also brings responsibility; above all, we need to use our perceptions for the highest good. In reading ourselves and others, we can learn about where our souls came from, the goals we are here to accomplish, the lessons we are here to learn, where we have energetic blockages that are preventing us from progressing, and more. This information can literally transform our understanding of reality. It takes us way beyond the general consensus that this physical world we live in is all there is. It can also help to see ourselves as immortal spiritual beings who have chosen this earthly format to learn and grow.
Using our perceptions for the highest good also implies that we intend to use them to empower ourselves and others to open fully to our unique forms of expression. One of the pitfalls of some psychics is the tendency to take another person’s power away by becoming their source of truth and wisdom. In reality, each of us holds our truth. Sometimes we have access to it; other times it is clouded by our limitations or simply by not having a way to put it into words.
When we have difficulty accessing our truth, input from others can help. In fact, on a soul level, we all have agreements to help and be helped by others throughout our lives. It may seem like an amazing coincidence that someone magically shows up just when we need help or some new information to guide us on our way, when it is all synchronously part of a larger plan.
With our intuitive abilities, we (Phillip and Jane) share information with others to help them to open more fully to their own truth and purpose. We provide input with the goal of triggering their awareness of something they may want to examine and understand to progress more easily on the spiritual path. With this in mind, we take a conversational approach, both sharing information and seeking input, rather than simply telling our clients what we perceive and implying that our perceptions are the ultimate truth. In this regard, it is also worth noting that an accuracy rate above 80 percent in intuitive work is considered high. We all bring some subjectivity to our readings, so we also need to understand that some of our perceptions are bound to be inaccurate.
The Learning Process
Many of the hundreds of spiritually-oriented individuals we have encountered have told us that opening to their intuitive abilities is a primary goal, as well it should be. We have also noticed that many people expect this opening to occur without any effort, as if one day fully-developed intuitive skills will magically arrive on their doorstep. This is not the way it works. Even the most gifted intuitives develop their abilities by practicing them and learning to interpret the images, sensations, and/or messages they receive.
Opening to your intuition is a lot like learning a new language. We all know that it is unrealistic for a person who wants to learn to speak French to simply expect the ability to appear. It takes practice to gradually build a vocabulary and learn to spell the many new words. The same is true of our intuitive abilities. It is by practicing and building a multi-dimensional communication system that we learn to use our higher senses.
At the same time, many people get glimpses of the abilities that lie dormant within them, like having a hunch about something, hearing a guiding voice, or seeing something with their inner vision. Author and hypnotherapist Katherine Zimmerman notes in her book Finding Your True Self:
When we are just learning to ‘tune in,’ we generally start with those closest to us. For example, I often reach for the phone knowing that my daughter is calling. I have even awakened at 2:00 A.M. with the feeling that Jennifer was about to call. It is much nicer than being jarred awake by the phone at that hour. I also used to pick up J’s thoughts as she was driving home after curfew. She would be worrying that I’d wake up and know that she had not gotten home on time. Her thoughts would actually wake me up, so I was often awake when she arrived home.
These kinds of experiences expand if we are open to them and give them more of our conscious attention. In fact, if we are paying attention, synchronicity is providing input throughout our days. Over time, the messages become a natural part of our daily lives, just as speaking a foreign language becomes natural with continued use. And as one begins to actually think in this new language over time, the experiences of your higher senses will become an integral part of your life, if you trust them and use them.
In developing our intuition, it is as if there is a veil in front of us that we can peer through to perceive the other levels of reality that exist beyond the physical world. We sometimes perceive that a person is telling us one thing, while on another, deeper level, he or she is saying something else. We also notice the continuous play of synchronicity and divine order in the events that unfold around us. This helps us to bridge the gap between our third dimensional perspective and our soul’s vast awareness, which we are in the process of integrating.
