2. HOW TO HAVE A HAPPIER NEW YEAR: RESOLUTIONS FOR OVERCOMING ONE’S CHIEF WEAKNESS
Identifying and eliminating your chief weakness or defense is essential for personal growth and successful relationships. There are seven chief defenses: self-deprecation, arrogance, self-destruction, greed, martyrdom, impatience and stubbornness. We each have all the weaknesses, but have selected a favorite one as we were growing up.
Children and teenagers try on these different armors, to stabilize themselves in an unpredictable world. This chief weakness pervades one’s negative ego, or false personality. By the time one is an adult, particularly by the late twenties, the chief weakness no longer serves any useful function and becomes an obstacle for growth and intimacy.

OTHER STRATEGIES
Ultimately, the chief weakness can be greatly minimized and even erased with a certain amount of self-awareness and spiritual growth. As a person progresses on the spiritual path, it's essential to identify and rein in the chief defense, which leads to eliminating this handicap. You accomplish this task by observing how the chief feature manifests, which involves being aware of distorted thoughts, limiting beliefs, negative emotions, poor choices, and disruptive behavior. In other words, merging with your soul's viewpoint neutralizes the features.
You can also be compassionate with yourself and choose to heal parts of yourself that have been wounded and taken on the chief feature’s defenses. Spiritual Kinesiology, EFT and the Getting Thru Techniques are excellent tools for bringing oneself back into wholeness and transforming the chief weaknesses into strengths.
