2. MAKING
THE MOST OF YOUR MIND
In this article we are including an important
subject that will be included in our upcoming audio program entitled Awake to
Your True Purpose (available around May, 2002).
This area has to do with different levels of your
thinking ability. As the Armenian sage George Gurdjieff pointed out over fifty
years ago, we actually can understand ourselves as having four brains, an
instinctive brain, a moving centered brain, an emotional brain and an
intellectual brain. Science is continuing to discover how these brains
interact holistically with each other.
For now, we will focus on the intellectual part
of our functioning, what is conventionally called the brain. It uses language,
numbers, words and concepts. Within this intelligence, there are divisions that
are based on attention.
The lowest part of our intellectual brain,
sometimes called the mechanical part, stores information, as if it is a computer
storing files. When using our mechanical part, we retrieve bits of information,
something that we have recorded previously. So we would use this mechanical
thinking to remember a phone number or a fact, or a memorized answer, or to
repeat an opinion that we heard.
Such rote knowledge is not true creative
thinking. It is based on pre-existing forms, whereby an explanation is fit into
a convenient box. This is the part of our mind that could come across an unusual
connection or thought and try to fit it into an idea it previously heard.
"Yeah I know, it’s just like such and such."
Now genuine thinking comes from what is called
the intellectual part of the intellectual center. In other words, the king part
instead of the jack part. The king of the intellectual center would weigh a
piece of information for its own merits and compare it to other ideas to gain
more relativity and perspective on the matter.
There are two sources that fuel our mechanical
thinking. One influence comes from the programming that we have received from
family and society. Such conditioning can show up in what we automatically
support or oppose because of what we have been told to think.
Mechanical thinking is also fueled by our chief
weaknesses, which create disharmony by opposing or trying to please others. For
more on chief weaknesses see http://www.gettingthru.org/ln0701.htm.
For example, if you say it’s a good idea, I
automatically say it’s not a good idea. Arguments thrive on such yes/no
thinking.
Or to use another example: If you say I’m
having a problem with my alcoholic girlfriend who keeps bothering me again, I
might try to bring in more creative and harmonious thinking and respond, "I
wonder if you are enabling her?" At which point, oppositional thinking can
kick in with a defensive reply of "I don’t enable her, I wouldn’t do
that."
Because of blockages, we often respond with
argument and denial, which are hallmarks of mechanical thinking.
Another telltale sign of mechanical thinking is
to consider only two possibilities. Either we go here, or go there. Either it is
true or false.
Such either-or thinking doesn’t consider more
than two possibilities, limiting itself to black and white and other opposites,
and responding with obvious choices. By considering three or more possibilities,
you elicit more creative thinking. Developing more choices gives you more
personal power and the ability to act.
Limited thinking uses words that are absolutes:
all, nothing, everyone, no one, never, always. For example, "He is always
right;" or "I never get it right;" or "Everyone knows
that;" or "Nobody would do something like that."
To be more accurate, you can use words like
sometimes, usually, often, and rarely. Also remember that there are those
exceptional times to use absolutes. By employing the king part of your
intellect, you will know how to phrase things because of your deliberate intent.
Higher-level thought is sometimes called
"psychological thinking." This means following through on a single
topic, examining it from different angles. Such intentional thinking requires
attention. It can take an in-depth look at a subject, and produce profound
connections and original thoughts.
In contrast, mechanical thinking is highly
random. For example, many conversations just go from one key word to the next. A
conversation might start about how the roads were congested, and then go to how
my nose is congested, and then change to how I don’t really feel like going to
work tomorrow because of the way I’m feeling, then go to the heavy workload I
have at the office. So there is no attention or continuity. Such conversations
are shallow and arbitrary.
SUMMARY
To summarize, be aware of trying to put different
ideas into familiar categories. Some knowledge is rote, like spelling a word or
recalling directions for driving. So it is correct thinking to merely record
such information and draw it from memory.
Be aware of either-or thinking, whereby you limit
yourself to only two possibilities. The world is usually much richer than that.
Also observe using absolute terms like all and nothing. When appropriate, engage
in psychological thinking where you stay with a subject and keep examining it
from different perspectives.
So the obstacle here is the misuse of our
mechanical thinking. The opportunity is to know when it’s appropriate to use
this mechanical thinking, such as for simple recall or to draw on our databank
of stored knowledge. Also note how our thoughts can stop our genuine ability to
think creatively and communicate with others. When needed, our higher-level
thinking can draw on the memories that were filed in the storehouse of our
intellect, and then use information for intelligent thought and communication.
Connecting more with your soul’s guidance will
help you put this knowledge into practice. Becoming more aware of the levels of
your thinking will help you to express yourself, get along better with others,
and fulfill your higher purpose.
