3. TIPS FOR BETTER
MUSCLE-TESTING
One of our readers recently wrote
us with some questions about muscle-testing (kinesiology):
"I'm working with your two
videos and books "Getting thru to Your Emotions" and "Getting
thru to Your Soul" and they are great so far...
"I'm having some trouble
applying the kinesiology on myself. In the book you mentioned using EFT
tapping to get past any blocks in regards to using kinesiology. What might
some good affirmations be?
" ‘Even though I don't
feel confident in my ability to apply muscle testing, I still deeply and
completely accept myself.?’
" ‘Even though I can't
tell if my "resist" is strong or weak, I still deeply and
completely accept myself?’
"Would this unblock me
with this do you think?"
In this article, we would like to
address these questions and add some more thoughts from our recent research on
this important subject.
CLEARING BLOCKAGES TO USING
KINESIOLOGY
To address any problem with EFT,
including blocks to being effective with kinesiology, start by defining the
related emotions. If you are feeling doubtful about your ability to muscle-test
yourself, measure the intensity of the doubt between one and ten and do EFT in
the usual way. Similarly, if you feel confused about using kinesiology or
fearful of what you might discover, you can do EFT on the confusion or fear. You
can add any statements you relate to in the affirmations, such as the ones Jeff
mentioned: "Even though I don’t feel confident in my ability to apply
muscle-testing, I still deeply and completely accept myself" and "Even
though I can’t tell if my ‘resist’ is strong or weak, I still deeply and
completely accept myself." Continue tapping on any emotions that come up
until you feel clear and peaceful. This should put you in the centered and
grounded state you want to be in for successful muscle-testing.
This is also a good opportunity
to use EFT on a positive affirmation, which we do in the same way as with a
blockage. For example, if you don’t feel a clear strong or weak response, you
can use the affirmation "My body provides clear strong and weak responses
with kinesiology." Then use a reminder statement like "these clear
responses" as you tap on each of the point. Some other affirmations:
"I can now muscle-test
with accuracy and ease."
"I feel confident in my
ability to use kinesiology."
ENERGY BALANCING TECHNIQUES
Here are a few other energy
balancing techniques that you may want to try for general balancing and to bring
your system into alignment for muscle-testing:
- Rub or tap your K-27
collarbone acupressure points. (These are the EFT collarbone points). You
can also cross your hands over to facilitate right-left brain hemisphere
balancing, although this is not essential. As you rub or tap continuously on
these points, breathe deeply through your nose and out through your mouth
for twenty seconds.
- Tap or massage your thymus
gland for about 15 seconds. The thymus is a tender spot located in the
center of the chest about two inches below the collarbone. You can also use
your fist to do this thymus thump, Tarzan style. It is also effective to
accompany the thumping with focusing on something positive, such as someone
you love, a beautiful scene in nature, or a work of art.
- Try the Cross Crawl, a
right-left brain balancing technique developed by Educational Kinesiologists
Paul and Gail Dennison. Lift the opposite arm and leg at the same time in a
sort of march. An alternative to this march is to touch your right hand to
your left knee, and then your left hand to your right knee as you step.
Repeat either technique for at least a minute while breathing in deeply
through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.
Psychotherapist John Diamond, MD
writes extensively about the thymus gland, which he says "controls the life
energy of the body," in his book Life Energy. This fascinating and
enlightening book describes a system Diamond developed for muscle-testing and
balancing the meridian system, which some people believe is the precursor of EFT.
The thymus gland regulates the energy flow through the body’s energy system
and is vital to the body’s immune system. Tapping on the thymus is a simple
technique you can use any time you want to feel energized. You can also find a

A FEW MORE TIPS
Although muscle-testing is a
basically simple procedure, it can be a bit tricky at first, especially when
testing yourself. Here are some more ideas for improving your effectiveness:
- For both testing alone and
with another person, it is important to be in a neutral, grounded state.
This is why we recommend doing a brief centering process before starting
with any testing. You can find one in the EFT Book, the Soul Book, and in
the newsletter archives at http://www.gettingthru.org/sn0599.htm.
- We all find it difficult to be
neutral about ourselves to one degree or another. Developing an ability to
view oneself in a neutral way is a valuable skill both for muscle-testing
and for progressing on the spiritual journey. One way to do this is to
pretend that you are a detective investigating yourself as an outside
observer and just observe yourself without judgment. This is a practical
approach to muscle-testing, because the goal is discover new things about
yourself. Observing yourself without judgment is also a key for progressing
spiritually, as it can help you to be compassionate toward yourself and also
toward others.
- Practice asking your body to
give you a strong or "yes" response and a weak or "no"
response, asking it to provide a clear difference between the two.
- To stay in a relaxed state
when testing alone, think of floating in nice warm water.
- Say to yourself or another
person you are testing, "You’re an easy read."
- If you are testing yourself,
say the test statement aloud, rather than just thinking about it. Like
saying the EFT affirmation aloud, this sends a stronger signal to the mind.
- While muscle-testing, keep
your eyes (if you are testing yourself) or the eyes of another person you
are testing focused on the floor, looking down and to the right. This
grounds the testee. In contrast, it can be distracting for the testee to
close his or her eyes, to look up, or to look at another person or thing.
- When muscle-testing another
person, try saying "hold" before pressing on the arm rather than
"resist," which might evoke a negative association.
- Other factors that can
undermine effective muscle-testing include environmental allergies, energy
toxins, chronic pain or depression, and reversals of actions and thoughts
(ADHD, dyslexia). To eliminate negative environmental factors, move away
from unfriendly electromagnetic influences such as computers, microwaves,
and stereo speakers. For internal clearing, drink a glass of water or take
several deep breaths before testing. For conditions like ADHD or dyslexia,
balance first with EFT.
THE VALUE OF PRACTICE
This article should give you some
ideas to try with yourself and with others. Like any skill that is worth
developing, accuracy and confidence with kinesiology improve with experience.
Experimenting with some of the techniques mentioned here and the checklists in
the Soul Book can be an enlightening way to do this. The Basic Checklist,
Current Lesson Checklist, and Polarities Checklist can be used any time to
practice and to learn more about yourself in the process.
If you are just getting started,
practicing with another supportive person or a group of people can provide that
extra something that is always present when two or more people gather for
healing work. And you have the added benefit of being able to share your
experiences and provide constructive feedback.
